The delegations of the Libyan House of Representatives and the High State Council called, from Rabat, the international community to support the electoral operation of December 24, 2021

Rabat (MAP) – The delegations of the Libyan House of Representatives and the High State Council called, on Friday in Rabat, the international community to support the electoral operation to be held on December 24, 2021, in accordance with consensual laws and on the basis of the results of the inter-Libyan political dialogue.

In a joint communiqué issued at the end of their consultative meeting on the electoral law, the two parties urged the international community to ensure the respect of the results of these elections through the sending of international observers to ensure the smooth running of the elections.

The consultative meeting held in Rabat, which aimed at agreeing on the organisation of the presidential and legislative elections of December 24, 2021, took place in “conditions of friendship and fraternity and in a climate of consensus and compromise between partners of the same country,” stressed the statement read by the representative of the House of Representatives, Al Hadi Seghir, during a joint press conference with the second vice-president of the High Council of State, Omar Bouchah.

This meeting reflects the importance of the upcoming electoral process and the need to “overcome the current differences” to lead Libya to “a sustainable and stable stage”, but also the conviction of the spirit of consensus between the Libyan House of Representatives and the High State Council, enshrined in the political agreement reached in Skhirat on 17 December 2015, according to the same source.

Moreover, the statement hailed Morocco’s support and backing for the Libyan people to achieve security and stability in the country, as well as “the warm welcome” of the Kingdom, while thanking the US ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland, for his accompaniment of this meeting.

This Libyan consultative meeting on the electoral law was marked by the presence of members of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), it was reported.

During this two-day meeting, held behind closed doors, the two parties discussed the outstanding points concerning the organisation of presidential and legislative elections, which are supposed to be held in Libya on December 24 and which constitute a crucial step to get the country out of the crisis it is going through.

Morocco’s hosting of this meeting comes after a series of rounds of Libyan dialogue held in the Kingdom and marked in particular by the agreement on the mechanism of accession to the seven posts of sovereignty provided for in Article 15 of the Libyan Political Agreement concluded in 2015 in Skhirat.
